Deputies investigating social media reports of animal abuse

MARION COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN) -- A viral warning for pet owners has prompted the Marion County Sheriff's Office to seek the help from the public in validating a claim that pets being given away on craigslist were being used for target practice.
KOIN Local 6 received several e-mails when the graphic started appearing on social networking pages on Saturday and in the pet sections of various Oregon craigslist county pages.
The graphic states that (allegedly) on Friday an anonymous caller contacted a (unspecified) local veterinary clinic and reported that they had saw a small group of people (3-4 both male and female) at a location in Scotts Mills. The graphic goes on to say the area may be near the Crooked Finger ATV area.
The author of the graphic describes a scene where animals were being let out of pet carriers and used as target practice with "real guns", it goes on to state that some animals were shot and killed but 2 cats were able to get away.
Despite the witness being too distraught to approach the shooters they managed to overhear that the animals may have been obtained through craigslist ads where owners gave away the pets to good homes.
The graphic finishes saying a police report had been filed and asked anyone to call the tip lines for the Marion County Sheriff's Office but no report number is given in the warning.
KOIN Local 6 called the Sheriff's Office dispatch center Saturday afternoon and spoke with one of the dispatchers. The dispatcher checked over his records and was unable to locate any call matching one as portrayed in the warning graphic.
On Sunday afternoon, Don Thomson with the Sheriff's Office issued a statement asking for help from residents in obtaining information about any animal abuse as described in the graphic. Thomson mentioned that they received a number of calls from concerned residents who reported the activity occurring as described. Some of the callers referenced the Facebook and social media postings as the source of the information.
Thomson was clear to state that they were working to determine if the reports are factual but did not state whether they had obtained any evidence to support the claims.
Craigslist has come under fire in the past from several animal activist groups including PETA for allowing pets to be given away on the website. Craigslist in response has posted the position of both groups in the about section of their website:
Our staff decided to dig through the various groups and the first posting we found in which the warning graphic was widely distributed was on Friday through the Salem Friends of Felines Facebook Page in which they shared the photo that another user had put on her wall.
