Family gets $333,000 for 2009 raid in which cops killed dog

A federal jury awarded $333,000 to a Chicago family Thursday after Chicago police officers raided its South Side home with guns drawn and shot its dog in a search that found no criminal activity in the apartment.

Teenage brothers Thomas and Darren Russell were in their second-floor apartment in the 9200 block of South Justine Street in February 2009 when officers announced they had a warrant to search both units of the two-flat. Thomas Russell, then 18, opened the door and found officers with their guns drawn, according to the lawsuit. Russell said that he put his hands in the air and asked permission to lock up his 9-year-old black Labrador, Lady, before they entered.

Police refused the request and came into the house, the lawsuit said. When Lady came loping around the corner with her tail wagging, Officer Richard Antonsen shot the dog, according to the suit, which alleged excessive force, false arrest and illegal seizure for taking the dog's life.

Thomas Russell was arrested and charged with obstructing police but was later found not guilty. No drugs were found in the Russell family's apartment, though police recovered drugs in the building's other unit, the family's lawyers said.

"Darren and Thomas did everything right that night," said Amanda Antholt, one of the family's lawyers. "They were cooperating with the officers and were met with guns to their heads and the shooting death of their family dog."

Jennifer Hoyle, a spokeswoman for the city's Law Department, said: "The officers involved in this case were executing a valid search warrant when this incident occurred and were simply protecting themselves. We are extremely disappointed and reviewing all of our options. In particular, we think the damages awarded to the plaintiffs were excessive."

The jury awarded Thomas Russell $175,000, Darren Russell $85,000 and their parents $35,000 each. The jury also awarded the family $2,000 in punitive damages, levied against Antonsen for shooting the dog, and $1,000, against the police supervisor who made the decision to arrest Thomas Russell.

On April 14, 2012 my best friend, Cisco, a Blue Heeler, was gunned down by an APD officer that was at the wrong address of a domestic disturbance call.

I was in my backyard, playing frisbee with my dog, Cisco. When I went to get something from my truck in the driveway, I was met by Officer Griffin, who pulled out his gun and told me to put my hands in the air. Cisco came out of the yard behind me and started barking when he saw the officer. Unable to restrain Cisco because I was being held at gunpoint, I told Officer Griffin that Cisco would not hurt him and begged that he not shoot him. The officer shot and killed Cisco anyway.

My dog didn't deserve to be shot. He deserved better. I believe the people of the City of Austin deserve better.

Cisco's death is a tragedy that cannot be undone, but justice can be served. Please sign this petition asking that APD Officer Griffin, who showed no remorse for wrongfully killing Cisco, be held accountable.

The Austin Police Department also needs to take steps to make sure officers don't kill any other innocent dogs by improving training and adopting a policy that only allows the use of lethal force on animals as a last resort.

 

Michael's dog was shot dead by a police officer for no valid reason

The last thing Michael Paxton expected on Saturday was to be held at gunpoint by a police officer in his own driveway while his dog, Cisco, was fatally shot a few feet away.

It had been a quiet afternoon -- Michael and Cisco were spending the day relaxing and playing frisbee in the yard -- until Michael stepped into his driveway and was suddenly confronted by an Austin police officer who drew his gun. Four seconds later, Michael's dog was shot dead.

The worst part is that Cisco hadn't done anything wrong and neither had Michael: the police officer was at the wrong address.

After a massive outcry on Facebook, Austin Police Chief Acevedo apologized to Michael and the officer was temporarily pulled from the streets. But Michael wants to make sure this never happens to anyone else. That's why he's asking the Austin Police Department to change its policies on the use of deadly force against animals.

Michael still can't understand why the police officer drew his gun on him, or why his dog was killed. But this doesn't have to be the end of the story. After 7,000 people signed a petition on Change.org in the wake of a similar shooting last year, the police department in St. Petersburg, Florida, increased training for officers on how to handle animals and declared that deadly force could only be used on an animal as a last resort, and only if there was an imminent threat.

If officials in Austin, Texas, hear from enough people, they'll be forced to adopt policies to prevent any more tragedies like what Michael's been through.

More than 25,000 people have already joined Michael to call for justice for Cisco, and to save the lives of other dogs.

  Thousands of unsuspecting Britons may be buying imitation Ugg boots made from the pelts of animals skinned alive.

  The fur comes from raccoon dogs, a species related to domestic dogs, farmed in China.

  A sickening video of the skins being collected has led activists to demand a ban on the trade and call for clearer labelling.

  The raccoon dog is indigenous to Asia and related to dogs and foxes. Ugg boots, right, are made from Australian sheepskin and cost up to £200 - but cheap imitations have flooded the market

  Genuine Ugg boots cost up to £200 and use sheepskin, which is produced in a humane way.

  But campaigners have found that other companies in Australia, where the popular boots are made, are using raccoon dog fur farmed in China and labelling it ‘Australian sheepskin’.

  Campaigners from Humane Society International (HSI) warned that the footwear could have found its way into the UK.

  While the law says that no products using dog or cat fur may be imported or sold in the country, there is no ban on fur from raccoon dogs, an Asian species with links to foxes, dogs and jackals. They are not related to raccoons.

  Wendy Higgins from HSI UK said: ‘I have been working in animal rights for more than a decade and have never seen a video that has shocked me so much.

  ‘It is not just the killing of the animals that is horrific, but the fact that they must endure such slow, painful deaths.

  ‘These animals are not dogs,  so there is no legislative reason why boots containing the fur cannot be imported into the UK. There are also many problems with the labelling of fur products, so many consumers will not be aware of where the fur in their boots comes from.’

  Websites found by HSI show other companies are selling the fur on gilets, coats and ear-muffs for delivery to the UK.

  Lena McDonald from Ugg Australia said the use of raccoon dog fur by other companies was tarnishing the entire industry as many people were unable to tell the different brands apart.

  She said her company used its own tannery to ensure the standards of its boots, but added that up to 40 products using fur from overseas contained the word ‘ugg’.

  She said: ‘As far as I can see many of these boots are not made in Australia at all yet they have the words Australia and ugg on them. We have seen companies cutting off tags saying “made in China” and putting on a “made in Australia” tag.’

  The UK Government announced its ban on importing cat and dog pelts from China in 2001 after it emerged that a fur collar, obtained from a leading store in the West End, contained dog fur.

  A total ban on the trade in dog and cat fur came into force across Europe in December 2008.

   

  HSI is looking into what action can ben taken and is urging readers to write to the Chinese Ambassador to lodge their disgust and horror at the cruelty endured by animals in the Chinese fur industry, particularly raccoon dogs, and to ask for the suffering to stop:

The men grabbed each cage off this huge truck and threw them to the ground - as high up as 30'. The cries of these adorable dogs and cats as they hit the ground sent me into shock. Several dogs and cats crammed into each cage, many already bloodied and many whose bones would break upon impact. I can still hear their screams.

As I watched the video progress, I realized that I was crying. The screams of live dogs and cats as they were skinned alive, their big eyes begging for mercy and receiving none, ripped my heart out and brought incredible rage from deep down inside. The next shots of cat pelts laid on the floor with all the dead bodies still twitching in piles cast aside like garbage, would have driven someone with a weak stomach right to the bathroom. It hardened my resolve against trading with barbarians. I can still hear their screams.

More pictures of dogs being chained - the worker jerking and tightening the chain while the eyes of incredible pain stared at the camera - prepared them for skinning, alive. I don't know what sound you call dogs and cats as they are being choked and then a knife taken to them right then and there and skinned. To me, it was screams so horrific, I can still hear them two days after I watched the video.

This is an everyday operation by "businessmen" who drive their trucks on the street like a produce truck would in the U.S. It's estimated these barbarians skin millions of dogs and cats every year - while they are alive. As I watched these "workers" go about their barbaric practice, I wondered how Americans could continue supporting them with their consumer dollar? This is Communist China in all its brutality. The skinning of live dogs and cats is done for money. These barbarians sell the pelts and toss the "meat." These pelts are illegally being intertwined with fake fur for many retail items being sold in the U.S., i.e. doll clothes and into fabric for human garments, i.e. parka hoods and sweaters. That's right: That Christmas gift sitting under the tree - if it came from Communist China - most likely is made from the fur of a dog or cat skinned alive. The EU refuses to ban this barbaric practice; it is condemned and illegal in the U.S.

D.C. Police Allegedly Throw Pet Dog Down Flight of Stairs, and Fatally Shoot Innocent Dog

What we are reporting known at this time is as follows:

At the annual Adams Morgan Day festival on 18th Street NW. D.C. police officers soon got involved, and at some point, one of them shot and killed the larger dog, described as a Shar-Pei mix dog.

 

This much, witnesses say, is clear: Sometime after noon on Sunday, two dogs started snapping at each other in the middle of a crowd enjoying cheese fries and funnel cake at the annual Adams Morgan Day festival on 18th Street NW. D.C. police officers soon got involved, and at some point, one of them shot and killed the larger dog, described as either a pit bull or Shar-Pei mix.

The disagreement is in the details.

 

Aaron Block, 25, of Dupont Circle said he was walking his 2-year-old Shar-Pei mix, Parrot, up 18th Street when the dog suddenly turned around and bit a poodle that was passing by. He said he separated the two dogs -- cutting his hand inside Parrot's mouth in the process -- and was subduing his dog when police arrived.

 

That's when a D.C. police officer took over, putting his knee in the middle of Parrot's back while he pulled the dog's forelegs behind him, Block said. He said that the officer then grabbed Parrot by his neck and threw him over a banister at the Brass Knob antique store and that just as the dog righted itself, the officer pulled out his gun and fired. Parrot was "a full 12 to 15 steps away," Block said, and was "making no aggressive overtures." The dog, he noted, "doesn't handle stairs well."

 

"The officer drew his gun in an unnecessary act of cowboy gunslinging law enforcement and shot my dog amidst a crowd of thousands," said Block, who was fostering Parrot while he was waiting to be adopted through the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. "The problems here are almost too numerous to count."

The officer eventually tossed that dog over a stairwell railing leading to The Brass Knob and shot it as it tried to charge back up, police and some witnesses have said. Many more witnesses — including the dog’s owner — have said the situation was under control after the dog fight was broken up, and police unnecessarily separated the dog and its owner, then shot the dog as it simply tried to regain its footing from being thrown down into the stairwell.

 

Block's account is supported by at least one witness, Jennifer Naideth, 29, who was in town from Los Angeles selling cosmetics at the festival. She called the shooting "so unnecessary and so violent," adding that "there was no human life in danger."

What does a lack of “due process” for dog owners come down to?

Dangerous dog laws, and animal care and control laws are a feel-good attempt to show the community that that authorities are taking action, even with a simple animal care or control complaint or a dog bite incident.

Unfortunately these animal laws do not provide any protective effects to change animal - owner behavior, merely punishment after the fact. There are many things that a community can do to prevent dog bites, animal neglect, animal abuse, or other care and control issues, including educating dog owners, parents, rural families or farmers, and citizens how to supervise and when to intervene in kid-and-dog, or dog-and-dog, interactions, teaching dog owners how to socialize and train their dogs with methods that encourage friendly behavior and providing some basic animal education about canine body language so the many misunderstandings we have with dogs each day can be reduced in their care and control issues.


Dog owners need to learn how to defend their dogs from ‘rogue’ Animal Control Authorities before they are confiscated, seized, and euthanized before you (as the dog owner) can obtain Legal Counsel.

 

It is not as simple as just telling an animal control authority, that there is no Due Process.

 

Animal Control like Brutal Abusive Cops will do ANYTHING they DAMN WELL PLEASED to you, UNTIL, and UNLESS, you obtain AN ATTORNEY, to establish legal precedents to stop them. It ALWAYS comes down to working thru an attorney, BEFORE the pets or animals are confiscated or euthanized.  The word needs to spread, that people, need top have A PLAN OF ACTION, and ATTORNEY AT HAND, BEFORE they are ever faced with Animal Control, in order to stop them from tyranny. If Animal Control, knocks on your door, and you refuse them entry. You have only the amount of time, it takes for them to obtain a search and seizure warrant from a judge, and their time to come back to you, in order for YOU TO GET AN ATTORNEY AND START THIS NEGOTIATION PROCESS OF DUE PROCESS, if your animal laws do NOT contain the Proper Due Process in the current Animal Laws (which almost every Animal Law in the nation does NOT have).

 

What must be done, by every citizen with a pet, to get DUE PROCESS in their jurisdiction.

 

First off, GET AN ATTORNEY, to represent you, in each case listed above. Preferably an Attorney at Law WITH some experience in Animal Law.

HELP ID this BAD COP and Prosecute Him!

HELP!!! The dog was named Parrot. This was taken moments before Parrot was murdered by the cop. The cop drove his knee into the middle of Parrot's back while stretching Parrot's forelegs behind him, as one would do with an armed criminal. Without waiting to determine whether this technique would calm Parrot, the cop grabbed Parrot, lifted him off the ground, and brought him to the top of the concrete staircase.

He threw Parrot over the banister, down twelve steps, and onto the concrete floor. Then, the cop stood at the top of the stairs, drew his weapon, and executed Parrot. Aaron, the animal's owner, cannot recall the number of shots fired.

Witnesses state that Parrot was not harming anybody and was simply frightened by the cop.
